A Dinner Date in Amsterdam: How to Plan the Evening

How to plan a relaxed dinner evening in Amsterdam with a companion, from choosing the area to timing.

A dinner is the most popular way to spend an evening with a companion, and for good reason. It is relaxed, public and easy to enjoy. Here is how to plan it well in Amsterdam.

Choose the right area

Amsterdam is compact, and the atmosphere changes from one neighbourhood to the next. The canal belt is classic and romantic. The centre is lively. Quieter areas such as the Jordaan or the south of the city offer a calmer setting. If you are staying near the airport or the Zuidas, Amstelveen has a good choice of restaurants and is easy to reach.

Book a table

Good restaurants in Amsterdam are often fully booked, especially from Thursday to Saturday. Reserve a table a few days ahead, and say the evening is for two. A table in a quiet corner is better than a busy window seat. Tell us the restaurant, and we will arrange our side.

Pick the style of evening

  • A classic dinner in a quiet restaurant.
  • A tasting menu for a longer, slower evening.
  • A drink first, and dinner after.
  • Dinner followed by a walk along the canals.

If you have no preference, we are happy to suggest something that suits the occasion.

Timing

Dutch dinner times are earlier than in many countries, and kitchens often close by ten. A start between half past six and eight works best. Plan enough time for travel, and arrive a few minutes early.

Dress code

Smart casual is suitable for most restaurants. For a high-end restaurant or a business setting, dress more formally. A good impression helps the evening begin well.

Conversation

A dinner is about company. Ask questions, listen, and let the conversation develop naturally. Avoid asking for personal details such as a last name, an address or an employer. Keep topics light, and respect any boundary.

Payment and costs

The companion’s time is arranged through the agency, in line with the confirmed rate. You pay for the dinner and drinks, as you would for any guest. Agree on this beforehand, so that nothing is awkward at the table.

Alcohol

A glass of wine is part of a good dinner. Keep it measured. If someone is too intoxicated to behave respectfully, the evening ends.

Discretion

If privacy matters to you, choose a quiet restaurant and tell us. We keep your details private and are discreet in public. You can read more about how we protect your data in our article on discretion and privacy.
