Amsterdam by Area: Where to Meet for an Evening
A guide to the main areas of Amsterdam, Amstelveen and Schiphol, and which suits dinner, drinks or a business evening.
Amsterdam is small enough to cross in half an hour, but each area has its own character. Choosing the right one makes the evening easier, whether you want a quiet dinner, a lively drink or a calm meeting near your hotel. Here is a guide to the main areas, and what suits each.
The canal belt (Grachtengordel)
The canal belt is the classic Amsterdam picture: tall houses, bridges and water. It suits a romantic dinner, a walk after dark and a quiet drink. The streets are beautiful but busy at weekends, so book a table in advance. It is also a good area for a canal evening, which we describe on the Services page.
The Jordaan
The Jordaan is a former working-class neighbourhood with small streets, cafés and independent restaurants. It feels relaxed and local, and it suits clients who prefer something quieter and more personal than the centre. Tables are small, which makes for good conversation.
The centre and the Dam area
The centre is the most central and the most crowded. Hotels, theatres and many restaurants are here, so it works for business travellers who want to stay close to their hotel. Expect tourists, and choose places with a little distance from the main squares if you want calm.
Amsterdam Zuid and the museum quarter
The south of the city is calmer and more refined. Wide streets, elegant restaurants and hotel bars make it ideal for a smart evening. It is a good choice if you prefer a formal setting, or if you are attending a business event in the area.
The Zuidas
The Zuidas is the business district, with offices, hotels and a good selection of restaurants. It is ideal for clients who work in the area or are attending a conference. In the evening it is quieter than the centre, which suits a discreet meeting. It is close to Amstelveen and to Schiphol.
Amstelveen
Amstelveen is where Pink Society is based. It is quiet, green and well connected, with good restaurants and international hotels. For many clients it is the easiest choice: no traffic through the city, a calm atmosphere and a short ride to the airport or the Zuidas.
Schiphol and Hoofddorp
If you are on a short stay, the airport area makes sense. Hotels around Schiphol and Hoofddorp have comfortable bars, and the transport is simple. Read our guide to an evening near Schiphol for timing and hotel tips.
How to choose
- Quiet and romantic: the canal belt or the Jordaan.
- Lively: the centre.
- Smart and formal: Zuid or the Zuidas.
- Practical and discreet: Amstelveen or Schiphol.
- A business evening: the Zuidas or a hotel bar near your hotel.
Practical tips
Parking in the centre is difficult and expensive, so use taxis or public transport. Check your hotel’s visitor policy. Book a table a few days ahead for weekends. If you are unsure, tell us where you are staying and what kind of evening you want, and we will suggest an area.
