Schiphol Layover and Hotel Guide
A long layover at Schiphol can be a wasted afternoon or a pleasant evening. This guide is for travellers who have a few hours or a night in the Amsterdam area and would like quiet, professional company: a dinner, a drink in a hotel bar or an evening out. It explains how much time you need, how to get around and how to arrange it discreetly.
Before you plan: check your transit rules
If you want to leave the airport, first check whether you may. Passengers from outside the Schengen area may need a visa or transit permission, depending on nationality and ticket. Check with your airline and the official Dutch government travel pages. We cannot advise on visas.
How much time do you need?
- Under 4 hours. Stay near the airport. A drink or a light dinner in an airport hotel bar is realistic. Leaving the airport is rarely worth the stress.
- 5 to 8 hours. A dinner in Amstelveen or a short trip towards Amsterdam is possible. Allow time to return, pass security and reach your gate. Airlines and airports publish their own advice on arrival times, so check it for your flight.
- Overnight stay. This gives the most freedom: a relaxed dinner in the city, a drink afterwards and a proper night of rest before your flight.
Getting around
Schiphol has a train station in the terminal, with frequent trains to Amsterdam Centraal, which takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Amstelveen is a short taxi or bus ride away. For late evenings, taxis are the simplest option. Plan your return with a buffer, and ask your hotel about luggage storage if you check out early.
Where to meet
Most layover meetings happen in a public place: a hotel bar or restaurant near the airport, or a dinner in Amstelveen or Amsterdam. We suggest venues that are quiet, well lit and easy to reach. See places we suggest and our guide to an evening in a Schiphol hotel bar.
How to arrange it
- Send an enquiry with your flight times, hotel or area, and the kind of evening you have in mind.
- We confirm availability, price and written terms before anything is final.
- You and your companion both show ID, as with every booking.
- You get a clear plan with a meeting place and a time that leaves a safe margin for your flight.
Our booking guide explains each step, and our cancellation and payment terms explain what happens if a flight changes.
If your flight changes

Common questions
Can I meet at the airport?
We suggest a nearby hotel bar or restaurant, not the terminal. Public places near the airport are easier to reach and calmer.
What if I only have three hours?
We would advise against leaving the airport. A drink in an airport hotel bar is possible, but only if your connection allows a safe margin.
Do you offer hotel room visits?
We do not promise anything beyond a public meeting at booking stage. Our FAQ explains what we arrange and what we do not.
